Coffee, grind, ratio

Aim

Learn the main levers before chasing small corrections.

Start

Use good coffee, rested after roast. Start near 1:16; for example, 15 g coffee to 240 g water. Use water just off boil.

Do

  • Keep the same coffee and water amount.
  • Change grind once.
  • Taste before changing anything else.

Notice

  • Fresh or flat
  • sharp or hollow
  • clean or rough

Words

Coffee, grind, ratio

Coffee quality and age set the ceiling. Ratio changes strength. Grind and time move extraction. Temperature is a later correction; use hot water as a default and adjust it only after coffee, grind, dose, and time make sense.

Grinder

A bowl grinder is enough to begin. Pulse, shake gently, and stop when the grind is close enough for the method. A burr grinder gives more control later; it is not the price of entry.
