Elevation above sea level. Higher altitudes slow growth and concentrate compounds — documented to produce higher total phenolic content and more complex sensory profiles. Citane grows at ~130 m: a lowland leaf.

The combined expression of soil, minerals, topography, and microclimate. Terroir is why a leaf from Karavaloor differs from the same variety grown elsewhere. It has measurable chemical consequences.

Nutrition, pH, organic matter, and microbial life. Soil feeds the plant through the root system. Healthy soil produces healthy leaves; depleted soil produces compromised ones.

Amount and seasonal distribution. Rainfall affects growth rate, water content in the leaf, and compound formation. Kerala's monsoon seasons directly shape Citane leaf growth and harvest timing.

Influences metabolism, growth rate, and aromatic compound development. Warmer temperatures accelerate growth. Citane's lowland warmth shapes its particular aromatic register.

Affects water balance within the leaf, stomatal behaviour, and disease susceptibility. Kerala's high ambient humidity is a defining characteristic of the Citane growing environment.

Light intensity drives photosynthesis and determines leaf thickness, colour, and compound levels. Under rubber shade, Citane receives filtered light — sufficient for growth, lower in bitterness than full-sun equivalents.

Strengthens leaf tissue, reduces pest pressure, and influences water evaporation. At Thumpassery Estate, wind is moderated by the rubber canopy — a further influence on leaf character.
